Abstract(s)
Introduction and objectives: Since the "Flexner Report" in the early 20th century, the medical curriculum has undergone changes to improve the quality of Medical Education. Across the world, medical schools employ various strategies to improve curriculum delivery, such as curriculum implementation and / or integration based on fundamental theory and practice. In this context, over time Clinical Immunology has become a scientific discipline of greater medical relevance, contributing to the clinical diagnosis, laboratory, treatment and prevention of diseases. However, not all Medical Schools include Clinical Immunology as a curricular unit in isolation, as is the case of the Faculty of Medicine of the 11 de Novembro University -Cabinda, but nevertheless the contents are integrated into other curricular units. Therefore, based on the improvement of the quality of medical education, there is the need to formalize a proposal for the implementation of the curricular unit "Clinical Immunology" in the medical training for this faculty. Methods: The work results from a bibliographical review on the general aspects and relevance of Clinical Immunology in the pre-graduate teaching of Medicine. We analyzed the curricula of some Medical Schools in which the formal education of Immunology is part of the curriculum of the course, at the pre-graduation level. The information was obtained from books related to the area of Clinical Immunology, scientific articles, using search tools such as Pubmed, Scielo and Google Scholar. Also, on-line questionnaires were used to evaluate students' perception of the medical cycle of the 11 de Novembro University on the importance of Immunology in medical education, as well as to evaluate the degree of knowledge of students of the 6th year the concepts of Basic and Clinical Immunology that they acquired during their medical training. A total of 278 students belonging to the clinical cycle of the Faculty of Medicine of the University 11 de Novembro, in the academic year 2018were enrolled in this study. Data analysis was based on "Google Forms ®" and Microsoft Excel® software. Results: Of the 278 students enrolled in the Clinical Cycle enrolled at the Cabinda Medical School in the academic year 2018, 159 answered the questionnaire, which represents a considerable rate of adherence to the study (57%). Regarding the students' perception about the importance of Clinical Immunology in medical education, it was verified that 92.5% of students consider Clinical Immunology important in the Medical curriculum, and 71.7% consider it necessary to increase the contents in Immunology in the curriculum, since the knowledge acquired in other curricular units has been useful during their clinical rotations. As for the questionnaire on the evaluation of theoretical knowledge in Basic and Clinical Immunology, it was verified that more than half of the students answered the questions wrongly, with a mean score of 9.5 / 20 points. Conclusions: After completing the study, it was concluded that there is a need to implement the curricular unit “Clinical Immunology” in the medical curriculum at the Cabinda Medical School, given its importance in medical practice, thus guaranteeing a higher quality of teaching.
