Abstract(s)
Nurses are the health care professionals who present greater musculoskeletal problems, as well as high rates of absenteeism associated with low physical condition and burnout problems. These professionals are subjected throughout their working day to major physiological workload, long shift hours, remaining too many hours standing straight and in the same position. The WorkActive - Exercise Program for Nurses - was developed by the Department of Sport Sciences, University of Beira Interior, in collaboration with the Hospital Centre of Cova da Beira. The program is an adaptation of the high intensity interval training with the inclusion of functional exercises. The main objective is to strengthen the musculoskeletal system, especially the abdominal muscles and upper limbs, and improve cardiorespiratory capacity in order to increase fatigue resistance, contributing to motivation and reinforcement of teamwork. An internship was carried out as part of WorkActive during 9 months. It intended to be an academic specialization with improvement of professional skills in the context of exercise and health. Through the internship, highlighting the learning achieved at planning level, structuring, teaching and control of the training program. These skills, necessary for professional performance in Exercise and Health, have been developed throughout the training sessions with full autonomy, and they result from a permanent analytical and reflective concern of professional experience, in order to improve the communication, prescription and guidance processes. Considering the acquisition of scientific expertise an experimental component was also developed in professional activity context. The effect of the WorkActive program was evaluated in physical fitness and the perception of musculoskeletal pain in 5 nurses, after 6 months of program implementation. The results showed a significant improvement of muscular resistance: abdominal muscle, (p=0.042), trunk and upper limbs (p=0.043) and lower limbs (p=0.043). Also cardiorespiratory capacity improved significantly (p=0.043), with no significant changes in body composition, although the BMI values were lower at the end of the program (p=0.043).
