Abstract(s)
LGBTQIA+ people experience social exclusion and marginalization in their everyday lives. The main focus of this monograph is the study of the ‘Relevance of Medical Competence in Health Care for the LGBTQIA+ Community,’ which aims to analyse the experiences of this population in health services and understand the possible implications for their overall health. One of the central aims of this study is to discuss the importance and relevance of adopting a perspective free of prejudices and stereotypes linked to sexual orientation, identity, gender expressions, and characteristics in medical practice. This is a qualitative dissertation with an exploratory approach divided into two parts. The first part refers to a literature review, which is the centerpiece of this research. A selection of 66 bibliographical resources in Portuguese and English was made. The articles were collected between October 2023 and November 2024 using the PubMed database and the Google Scholar search engine. The second part was drawn up through a survey applied via the Google Forms platform, consisting of a set of open-ended and multiple-choice questions, to the Presidents of the various Medical Student Centres regarding the approach to the health needs of the LGBTQIA+ community in the context of medical training in Portugal. The conclusion is that it is essential to put into practice a non-cis heteronormative, empathetic, informed, and inclusive medicine that can respond holistically to the needs of all people. It was shown that trans people, lesbian and bisexual women, and gay men continue to be the target of uninformed medicine and that, at some point, they have experienced some discrimination in health services. It is also clear from the student's responses in the medical centers that there are gaps in the medical curricula, which is why swift action on the part of medical schools is crucial in training future doctors who are competent in responding to the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.
