Abstract(s)
Nowadays, and generally speaking, the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder seems to be increasingly frequent. These patients can show several different clinical presentations (as the term "spectrum" suggests). There is a question mark over the preparedness of health services - and their professionals - for the differentiated needs that these patients require, both in hospital and in primary health care. It is therefore essential to raise awareness and train these professionals in order to provide a more specialized, distinctive and clinically appropriate approach. In this way, the present work focused, at first, on surveying, reviewing and compiling the various national and international guidelines (written by entities working with Autism Spectrum Disorder and based on the best scientific evidence) on how to approach these users in the various medical and clinical contexts. As a result, a final systematization was carried out, which allows all those involved and interested in the health field to acquire the basic knowledge necessary for their daily medical practices with patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In conclusion, although their clinical presentation can be very varied, there are several strategies that health professionals can and should use. However, more appropriate research in this area is essential, allowing for better and more individualized healthcare for the autistic community, as well as greater dissemination in the scientific community of this gap in medical care.
