Abstract(s)
A presente investigação faz uma articulação entre saúde mental e género, discutindo particularmente as diferenças de género no que diz respeito à depressão. Este estudo analisa o modo como a construção social do sofrimento psíquico e as representações sociais da masculinidade e da feminilidade têm impacto nas significações, experiência, identidade e em todo percurso de doença; bem como contribuem para a maior representatividade de mulheres com depressão, devido a um conjunto de fatores amplamente discutidos.
A fundamentação para a pertinência deste tema deve-se ao facto de a depressão ser atualmente a principal causa de incapacidade e uma das principais causas de morbilidade, existindo quem a considere como a “epidemia psíquica das sociedades democráticas”. Porém, esta tem sido frequentemente associada a uma doença no feminino, indicando os dados a nível mundial uma prevalência no surgimento e diagnóstico de depressão entre as mulheres, assinalando uma diferença de género bastante acentuada. Sendo já reconhecida a relação entre género e saúde, e mais particularmente entre género e saúde mental, é pertinente que essa relação seja explicitada no que respeita à depressão.
Relativamente aos procedimentos metodológicos, recorreu-se a uma abordagem qualitativa, cuja técnica utilizada foi a entrevista não-estruturada. Foram realizadas um total de doze entrevistas a indivíduos com diagnóstico de depressão, entre os quais nove mulheres, o que ilustra precisamente esta diferença. Quanto às conclusões que se podem retirar da análise dos discursos dos indivíduos entrevistados, podemos notar que estes vão de encontro com o que é assinalado pela literatura: a experiência da e a vivência com a doença, algo que parece ser profundamente pessoal e individual, demostra a conformidade com a construção social do género e as representações das masculinidades e feminilidades, conduzindo a diferentes modos de viver e experimentar este sofrimento, entre homens e mulheres.
The present investigation makes an articulation between mental health and gender, discussing the differences regarding to depression. This research analyzes the way how the social construction of the psychic suffering and the social representations of masculinity and femininity have impact on significance, experience, identity and in all the course of the disease; as well as it contributes for the major representativeness of women with depression, due to a set of factors widely discussed. The foundation to the pertinence of this topic is given to the fact that depression is nowadays the principal cause of incapacity and one of the main causes of morbidity, there are people that consider it as “psychic epidemy of democratic societies”. However, this has been often linked to a female disease, this way the data on a global scale show a prevalence on the appearance and diagnosis of depression between woman, pointing out one difference among gender widely significant. Being already recognize the relationship between gender and health, and more particularly between gender and mental health, it is appropriate that this relation be made explicit concerning to depression. In relation to the methodological procedures, it has been appealed to a qualitative approach, which used technique was the non-structured interview. Were conducted a total of twelve interviews to individuals diagnosticated with depression, among which nine women, what illustrates precisely this difference. About the conclusions that can be taken of the analysis of the speeches of the interviewed individuals, we can notice that this one meet with what is pointed out by literature: the experience and livingness with the disease, something that seems to be deeply personal and individual, it shows the compliance of social construction of gender and the representations of masculinity and femininity, conducting to several ways to live and to try this distress between men and women.
