Abstract(s)
Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC).
Several studies, in families with children in different age groups, report that when there is good communication and a good range of resources to deal with difficulties and adversities within the family, parents tend to feel more effective and more satisfied in their role, feeling more competent in general. This study aims to understand the relationship between family functioning and the sense of parental competence in parents of school-age children (6-9 years). For its realization, a sample composed of 154 mothers and 19 fathers of 173 children with an average age of 7.64 (DP = 1,146) was used. The fathers/mothers who participated completed a sociodemographic questionnaire as well as the portuguese versions of the Systemic Clinical Outcome Routine Evaluation (SCORE-15) and the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC). Initially, through Pearson's correlation, it was possible to conclude that the better the family functioning in any of its three dimensions (communication, resources and difficulties), the better the sense of parental competence, both in terms of efficacy and satisfaction. Then, the results of multiple linear regressions demonstrated that the resources that the family has and the way it deals with adversity predict both satisfaction and self-efficacy perceived by parents. This study contributed to the analysis of family functioning and the sense of parental competence perceived by portuguese mothers/fathers with school-age children and strengthened the psychometric characteristics of the portuguese versions of SCORE-15 and PSOC.
