Abstract(s)
“Architecture is not only about domesticating space, it is also a deep defense against the terror
of time. The language of beauty is essentially the language of time-less “
Karsten, Harries in”Building and the Terror of Time”1982, p.59
idosos isolados e dependentes (INE, Censos 2011).
“Architecture is not only about domesticating space, it is also a deep defense against the terror of time. The language of beauty is essentially the language of time-less “ Karsten, Harries in”Building and the Terror of Time”1982, pp59 Currently in Portugal we can observe the existence of a predominantly ageing society, financially weak and unconnected to other sections of the population, creating isolated and dependent elderly (INE, Census 2011). This phenomenon, which occurs also in Europe (EUROSTAT 2008), is changing the social dynamics of the Portuguese society, caused by various factors such as falling birth rates (INE, Censos 2011), increasing longevity in developed countries and increased life expectancy. Against this social context, the spatial realities that the elderly are faced daily are notoriously inadequate for their own needs and consequently their quality of life (DARÉ, 2008), where sometimes the elderly are deprived of their independence, or in the other hand, sees his habitat turned on an hospitalized environment and enhacer of domestic accidents (Programa nacional para a saúde das pessoas idosas, 2004). The moment that the old habitat change is a break with all their conceptions of space, where the alternatives are few, going to live with family or live in assisted living facilities for the elderly. Another relevant factor is that, we have ingrained in our culture, the natural act of being the family taking care of their parents when they become dependent, removing them from their home environment where they built routines and memories;people with special requirements and senior citizens are still living of governmental or familiar help, locked at home. ( GOMES, 2011) Under this theme, the aim of this study is to analyse and understand the current realities of Elderly Nursing homes, preparing guidelines based on the Architecture and Inclusive Design principles, implementing strategies based on physical and sensory access to the humanization of the elderly’s habitat.
