Abstract(s)
âmbito e aqui apresentados: Conversa com a Natureza I (2020), o documentário
work in process).
obra sintetiza.
conhecimento.
This thesis, named "Conversations with Nature through the plant pigments: the creative process with anthotype'' operates a synthesis of the theoretical and practical research, carried out throughout the PHD in Media Arts of Arts and Letters University of Beira Interior, in Covilhã, Portugal, between 2019 and 2023. With the purpose of investigating photographic making through the historical process of photography from the 19th century, known as anthotype, which is directly related to the plant pigments, it explored the intersection of this historical process with digital photography, video and other installation art practices. This research had as a priority the prcess of creation and the lived experience of following some agro-ecological farmers, with whom I developed a collaborative process of creation through their non-agrotoxic food. In addition, there was a relationship with certain original peoples of the land, the indigenous people, which proved to be inspiring for the artistic works developed in this scope and presented here: Conversations with Nature I (2020), the documentary Saberes da Terra (2020), Nhakkrarati (2022) and the installation A terra é o que no une (2022 - 2023), Conversations with Nature II (2022). I also add the experience with high school students from the Federal Institute of Brasilia, in the photography subject, which I taught in the first semester of 2022. To this end, the research was divided into three interrelated investigative axes: (1) The creative process with the anthotype and the connection with plant pigments and agroecological agriculture, (2) Hybridisms between imagetic languages and (3) Relationship between the work and the creative process, the participant, and the space. Due to the pandemic of covid-19, this research was taking multiple directions and it was dealing with constant indefinite points. Thus, the research was considered as a learning process that prioritizes the path and the experience, open to technical, natural, and temporal limits. The processual character was assumed, in which the object of study is the creative process itself of the artistic practices carried out with the anthotype, its unfoldings, restlessness and relations. The investigation assumes the main objective of reflecting on the creation of artistic works in anthotype, its relationship with agroecological agriculture and its intersections with new digital image technologies, such as video, digital photography and installation. Therefore, at the mercy of the countless rhizomatic ramifications (Deleuze & Guatarri 2004) of this journey, the focus of the investigation was not restricted only to creative work. Rather, it embraced a multiplicity of other connections, both practical and theoretical. Also, the concept of creation as a network in process, proposed by Cecília Salles (2016), translates the connections of our research to a whole plurality of aspects that the work synthesizes. In this way, the research of the PhD in Media Arts combines theory, practice and (self) criticism to articulate its research process, giving importance to the role of the artistresearcher who documents his experience and knowledge through his practical work and writing, considering the artistic practice itself as a source of knowledge.
