Abstract(s)
We are in an age where information has become ubiquitous. People now access it in a variety of formats, platforms, and innumerable devices. Loyalty to a particular news organization or technological device to consume news is a thing of the past. This new communication ecology is being built from digital techniques and platforms. The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to a better understanding of this unique communicational context, characteristic of the XXIst century. This research deals with consumer relations, ownership, production and dissemination of local information that appears in online social networks in the form of social interactions. For its innovative character, in answering to a moment of social transition, the research found that these changes in the communication context are directly related to a generational issue, and that people of Generation Y are the center of the transition of this consuming habits. This generation is composed by individuals highly skilled in digital communication technologies, and own a wide range of mobile devices, to connect in mobility and real time, demonstrating that the contemporary media ecology is also founded on other social dynamics: the communicational flow linked to sociability by links on social networking sites. This ongoing process induced other reflections on the role of these communications, which are beyond the traditional pattern in the formation of civic engagement, one that has its main social base in the local information that supplies the community with social capital. In other words, this work aimed at studying systematically and reflecting on local social media news, since it is known that local communication, despite recent concepts of globalization and de-territorialization, is critical to the development of communities, of society in general, and of the relations between people. The methodology for data collection was quantitative in the context of digital ethnography, and the corpus composed of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal, chosen so by being people in mobility and that represent the concept of local news value in the context of digital communication. This connection to local news has been strengthened even at a distance due to the Internet, as this study will show.
