Abstract(s)
Introduction: Since we currently verify shortage of organs for donation for a total increasing number of patients with organ failure in the context of chronic disease, every effort should be made to improve the donation process and bridge failures so far described. Objectives: To characterize all deaths recorded in the Stroke Unit and Emergency Service of the Hospital Cova da Beira, between 2008 and 2014, including the nature of the cause of death, the fatal progression process and time of diagnosis (actual or virtual) of brain death; identify the number of cases of possible diagnosis of brain death and without exclusions to departure for donation, thus defining the potential effective donation; identify the number of cases diagnosed with brain death and implementation of organ donation process. Method: A descriptive, retrospective epidemiological study, driven by the analysis of all deaths in Stroke Unit and Emergency Service between 2008 and 2014, which accounts for a total 811 cases. Results: Demographically, the age of potential donors ranged between 19 and 104 years. Of the 811 cases, it was found that 136 (˜16.77%) would be, in principle, suitable for donation. To donors of expanded criteria, about 125 of the 136 potential donors (˜91.91%) were in the age above 60 years. Discussion: From the analysis of the results it was concluded that there are many cases likely to become donors. This primary assessment is essential to identify potential donors and thus increase the number of donations in Portugal, in order to combat the increasingly pronounced lack.
