Abstract(s)
Introduction: Currently, obesity represents a public health problem, and bariatric surgery is the most effective method for it. Like other procedures, bariatric surgery also has associated complications, one of which is hypoglycemia. Individuals who suffer from this pathology have a reduced quality of life and an increased risk of adverse events. Objective: This review aims to establish the link between hypoglycemia and bariatric surgery. Thus, we intend to answer the following question: Is hypoglycemia a important complication of bariatric surgery? This work also aimed to analyze the possible treatments for this increasingly prevalent pathology. Methodology: The methodology used to carry out this dissertation consisted of a search for scientific articles, published between january 2016 and september 2021, resorting the PubMed database, using the combination of the keywords “hypoglycemia” and “bariatric”. After deciding on the topics that would be addressed in this review, articles focusing on the relationship between bariatric surgery and hypoglycemia and those that helped in their framing were selected. Conclusion: At the present time, existing data on hypoglycemia as a consequence of bariatric surgery are scarce and somewhat divergent, making it extremely important to define guidelines for it, so as to raise awareness, both among patients and health care providers, for the recognition of this pathology. At the same time, further studies are essential for the discovery of more innovative and effective treatments.
