Abstract(s)
permanência deste, no relvado frente à galeria.
This dissertation’s goal is the study of the Serpentine Gallery pavilions, presented every summer in London. These projects began in 2000, and since then every year an architect or team of architects is invited to design a pavilion, within six months maximum from the invitation to its conclusion, and three additional months of display in the lawn in front of the gallery. The arquitects which presented a pavilion so far were Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Toyo Ito, Oscar Niemeyer, MVRDV, Álvaro Siza Vieira with Eduardo Souto de Moura, Rem Koolhaas with Cecil Balmond, Olafur Eliasson with Kjetil Thorsen, Frank O. Gehry, SANAA, Jean Nouvel, Peter Zumthor, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron with Ai Weiwei and, at last, Sou Fujimoto. Although the requirements imposed are the same, the pavilions are completely distinct from each other. They present different approaches regarding concept, paths, relationships with the surroundings and the gallery’s building, structural solutions, materials or even function. In this dissertation, all these matters will be studied in each pavilion, establishing parallelisms and distinctions, contextualizing them yet in their authors’ work. Finally, there will be presented a design proposal of a summer pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery’s lawn, in which will be considered the same requirements imposed to all the architects invited to design the temporary structures.
