Abstract(s)
Agression is the intentional use of physical force or power, whether real or in the form of a threat, against yourself, another individual or against a group or community. Relationship violence has been the focus of more attention in the last two decades, and it has quickly become apparent that this is a socially and psychologically problem. In turn, the Personal Growth Initiative is about the individual's ability to actively and intentionally engage in their personal growth process. Is the capacity to make personal changes, when the conditions of life change, in order to develop positively. Thus, the objective of the present study is to understand how these two variables relate and change as a function of variables with gender and age, for example. For this purpose, a protocol was applied to 259 students from higher education institutions in Beira Interior, aged between 18 and 28 years (M = 21.00, SD = 2.179). From this protocol only two instruments were considered: the Buss & Perry Aggressiveness Questionnaire, Portuguese version (Simões, 1993; Cunha & Gonçalves, 2012), the Personal Growth Initiative Scale of Robitschek et al. (2012) and the Sociodemographic Questionnaire. The main results allow us to conclude that men present higher means for aggressive behaviors, with the exception of the "anger" factor, which obtained higher scores in the female participants. Statistically differences were observed in the "Physical aggression" scale in relation to the gender, allowing to conclude that the men presented more aggressive behaviors from the physical viewpoint in relation to the women. It was also possible to verify that the two large variables under study are related negatively, that is, the greater the aggressive behaviors, the less the individuals' Personal Growth Initiative.
