Abstract(s)
The proposed theme describes the project practice in the creation of a line of school furniture for rural areas of Huambo, province of Angola. The Appropriate Technologies (AT) principles were applied in order to take advantage of material resources and boost local labor. For this purpose, a study was made of the natural resources of the province of Huambo, of the existing technology and available labor capacities that can take advantage of the concept of AT, as well as the geographical reality of Angola, making a recognition of the materials offered by the territory, technologies and human resources, as well as the perception of the most pressing needs of rural populations. This allowed to design according to the parameters recommended by the concept of AT. This work describes the various phases of design and production, from the initial concept to the final prototype. This project was intended to allow the understanding and application of ATs in a rural context of an Emerging Country in the creation of design products, which take advantage of local resources with an economic viability and as a factor in the development of populations autochthonous: school furniture that is easy to build by local labor, and with affordable prices that allow the product to be marketed at the regional and national level. This type of approach allows to mitigate the problems arising from the scarcity of this type of equipment in schools in rural communities in Angola, and also to help the development of small-scale factories and family workshops that exist throughout Angola. Based on this study of the territory, and also through examples already formulated by designers and NGOs for other Emerging Countries, two initial prototypes were developed with the aim of launching two different lines of school furniture in the use of materials.
