Abstract(s)
o VIH e as doenças sexualmente transmissíveis, a depressão e o suicídio, e a dependência
The LGBTQ+ community has historically endured discrimination in sociocultural and political-legal settings and currently still faces specific challenges, with healthcare being no exception to this. Thus, the main objective of this monograph was to conduct a descriptive review of the most current scientific knowledge regarding LGBTQ+ healthcare while particularly approaching the specificities of LGBTQ+ health and the accessibility and inclusiveness of LGBTQ+ populations in healthcare settings. As a matter of fact, health inequalities, when compared to the heterosexual and cisgender populations, are particularly notorious regarding sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and substance use. While intersecting one another, these areas interact synergistically, each exacerbating the vulnerability to the others, resulting in an adverse impact on the health status of LGBTQ+ people. Accordingly, this population has higher rates of a panoply of related health problems such as HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, depression and suicide, and dependence on tobacco, alcohol, and illicit substances. Furthermore, the rates at which this population seeks preventive healthcare, such as contraception or screenings, are decreased. Enhancing these inequalities is the lack of access by this population to non-discriminatory, inclusive, competent healthcare that is adaptable to their needs, which in turn is motivated by the paucity of proper education of students and healthcare professionals regarding LGBTQ+ health, and the heteronormative and exclusive environments where care is provided. On account of this being the current framework, it is imperative to rethink healthcare services to make them more inclusive and more human, with the intention of dispelling these inequalities and honoring the right of this population to accessible healthcare. Such a goal can be achieved through education and awareness-raising amongst students and health professionals along with the restructuring of the organizational principles of healthcare institutions.
