Abstract(s)
Compassion, in its two aspects (self-compassion and compassion for others), is a psychological capacity that integrates the caring of human beings for themselves and for others. When situations are experienced as stressful, they can lead to the occurrence of Psychological Distress, causing subjects to adopt behaviors detrimental to their health. This study aimed to evaluate levels of Compassion and Psychological Distress in adults according to sociodemographic variables (qualifications, place of residence, socioeconomic status, and professional/occupational situation). The results indicated statistically significant differences in the levels of SelfCompassion in term of qualifications, with the higher the education level, the higher the level of Self-Compassion. Statistically significant differences were also found in the levels of Compassion in term of qualifications, indicating that the higher the level of qualifications, the higher the level of Compassion; and in the levels of Compassion in term of place of residence. As for Psychological Distress, the results pointed to the existence of statistically significant differences according to socioeconomic status (SES) and professional status. The initial hypothesis that the lower the SES, the higher the level of Psychological Distress was supported. In relation to professional status, unemployed individuals showed higher levels of Psychological Distress than employed individuals.
