Abstract(s)
No entanto,
A opinião pública acerca destes
The media, particularly newspapers, have an important role in putting on the agenda the themes which are important to society. One of such themes is migration. For many years Portugal was a country of emigration. However, this trend has changed and, today, our country is primarily a country of immigrants. It is understandable that immigrants and ethnic minorities associated with them have a prominent place in the news. Public opinion about these groups is dependent, in a large way, of the image that media convey through their stories. However, these stories tend to treat these groups linking them to deviant behaviors - thus assuming a role in the internalization of stereotypes and the construction of discrimination against these groups. In this work we try to understand when and how two considered "reference" newspapers in Portugal, Diário de Notícias and Público, report immigrants and ethnic minorities. The work is divided into two parts: the first part, devoted to the theoretical framework, discusses issues related to the journalistic construction of stereotypes and the relationship between immigration and the media. In the second part, the empirical study, we present the data obtained through quantitative analysis, complemented with a qualitative analysis, of a sample of news regarding immigration and ethnic minorities published by the Diário de Notícias and the Público during the year 2008.
