bioativos.
Staphylococcus aureus, incluindo MRSA.
A atividade
The present report, prepared within the scope of the curricular unit “Internship” of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Beira Interior, is organised into two chapters that describe the professional experience acquired in the areas of Research and Community Pharmacy. The first chapter describes the research project developed at RISE Health, with the objective of studying the antibacterial activity of Sorbus aucuparia extract, harvested in the Serra da Estrela region, against different strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The increasing levels of antimicrobial resistance, combined with the worrying gap in the development of new antibiotics, represent a significant public health challenge. This situation highlights the growing importance of adopting integrated strategies for prevention, surveillance, and the rational use of antibiotics, as well as the search for new therapeutic sources. Plant species such as Sorbus aucuparia have been investigated for their antimicrobial potential due to their chemically diverse composition rich in bioactive compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of S. aucuparia extract, collected in the Serra da Estrela region, against different Staphylococcus aureus strains, including MRSA. The extract was prepared from S. aucuparia leaves and stems and tested against previously identified strains. Antimicrobial activity was assessed using the disk diffusion method and by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Although the extract exhibited relatively low antimicrobial activity against the tested strains, it was not entirely devoid of bioactive compounds. Moreover, the concentration of these bioactive constituents in the extract was found to depend on multiple factors. The second chapter describes the professional experience developed in the field of community pharmacy, carried out at Farmácia São Cosme, in Covilhã, between February and June 2025. This chapter outlines the knowledge acquired and the various activities performed throughout the curricular internship.
