Abstract(s)
Em 1974, Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann apresentou a espiral do silêncio, uma teoria que tenta
explicar a formação, continuidade, alteração, efeitos e funções da opinião pública. A opinião
pública assume aqui como principal função assegurar a coesão social, ameaçando com o
ostracismo e a exclusão os que se lhe opõem. A autora alemã sempre admitiu abertamente que
a espiral do silêncio é tributária e subsidiária de outros autores. A sua teoria visava
precisamente recuperar e resgatar um conceito de opinião pública que a autora dizia remontar
à Antiguidade Clássica. Elaborar uma genealogia da espiral do silêncio é o primeiro objetivo
deste trabalho. Para o efeito, partimos das referências deixadas pela própria autora nos seus
textos e recorremos aos conceitos de público, espaço público e opinião pública. O segundo
objetivo é testar empiricamente esta teoria da opinião pública. Teremos em conta as
abordagens críticas e os desenvolvimentos metodológicos suscitados pela espiral do silêncio ao
longo dos seus mais de 40 anos de vida. A expressão da opinião sobre as praxes académicas é o
tema da nossa investigação empírica. Tendo por base uma amostra de 701 estudantes da
Universidade da Beira Interior e do Instituto Politécnico da Guarda, pretendemos responder a
duas questões principais. Primeira, serão os estudantes condicionados na expressão da sua
opinião sobre as praxes académicas? Segunda, existirá uma espiral do silêncio associada às
praxes académicas? Os resultados do nosso estudo empírico apontam para uma resposta
afirmativa a estas duas questões.
In 1974, Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann presented the theory of the spiral of silence, where she proposes an explanation for the formation, continuity, change, effects and functions of the public opinion. In her vision, public opinion guarantees social cohesion, threatening with ostracism and exclusion everyone that challenges it. In the elaboration of the spiral of silence theory, Noelle-Neumann has acknowledged the contribution of other authors. In fact, her theory aimed at recovering the concept of public opinion that had its origin in Classical Antiquity. To propose a genealogy of the spiral of silence is the first objective of this thesis, using the references in the author’s texts and also of the concepts of public, public sphere and public opinion. The second objective of this thesis is to provide an empirical test of this theory of the public opinion. We will consider the critical approaches and the methodological developments raised by the spiral of silence in the last four decades. Our empirical investigation focus on opinion expression on hazing. We use a sample of 701 students from Universidade da Beira Interior and Instituto Politécnico da Guarda to investigate two questions. First, are the students restrained on their opinion expression on hazing? Second, is there a spiral of silence associated to hazing? Our results suggest a positive answer to both questions.
