Abstract(s)
Is fashion an art form or not? For instance, can the creative impulse, as an artist, go through the creation of garments instead of painting a picture? And can this creation be considered a form of artistic expression? The discussion about whether or not fashion is an art form has provoked a debate over time and has not yet managed to get a unanimous answer. The difficulty in reaching an answer is due to the gap of finding a concrete definition for both art and fashion. The fact that philosophy neglects fashion for considering it as a too superficial phenomenon, not worthy of a serious research, also leads to a reduced understanding of the concept (Svendsen, 2010). According to Richard Martin, the disregard of the theme is also due to the lack of willingness to see fashion as art, which leads to a great lack of fashion criticism (quoted by Kim, 1998). The perception of the concept of fashion is also often linked mainly to its commercial character, which leads to increasing its disregard as a possible form of artistic expression. But what are the real origins of fashion? Is it possible to have different connections? This master's thesis has as main objective to understand if fashion is perceived as an artistic form, having as main question: "Is the creation of clothing a form of artistic expression?”. It is also intended, first to understand if it is possible to reach a closed concept of art, and if so, if there will be something that prevents an artist from expressing himself through the creation of garments and still being recognized as a work of art. Secondly to learn about the history of fashion and what are the perceptions about its concept, in order to understand if it is plausible to associate fashion mainly with consumerism. In order to answer the questions and achieve the proposed objectives, a literature review was made on the subject and an experimental project was developed. In this project the author created a piece, having as main motivation self-expression. A questionnaire was later developed in order to understand the possibility of perceiving a creation of clothing as an art form. With the knowledge acquired in the literature review and with the results obtained through the questionnaire, it is concluded that the creation of clothing can in fact be a form of artistic expression. However, despite the results obtained, it is not intended to give a closed answer, after all "not all fashion is art, in the same way that not all painting or sculpture is" (Morais, 1994, p.43). But fashion can, effectively, be art.
