Abstract(s)
Nowadays, there is a lot of information that supports the hypothesis that acetylsalicylic acid better known as aspirin can have an effective action not only in prevention but also in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). A set of randomized, controlled phase III studies is underway to evaluate and deepen the potential role of acetylsalicylic acid in the prevention and treatment of this type of cancer. Although in most cases it is well tolerated, acetylsalicylic acid has some adverse effects that need to be taken into account such as dyspepsia and bleeding. In this way, it will be important to deepen the debate on the advantages and risks of the possible use of the drug in cancer cases. In this review we intend to gather the existing knowledge that suggests a role of acetylsalicylic acid in the prevention and treatment of CRC. A brief discussion on the existence of potential biomarkers that assist in assessing the response to acetylsalicylic acid is also an objective. Finally, it is intended to reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of using the drug in question in the context of cancer.
