Abstract(s)
Old age is a phase of life that has been socially devalued and negatively represented, wich turns out to reflect on the self-perception of older people. The aging of the Portuguese population is somehow emerging new social problems that can be transmitted in social discrimination against this group. This discrimination can be observed through behaviors, attitudes, stereotypes and prejudices in social interaction towards the elderly, as well as through the media. The primary objective of this study is to realize one's own point of view of the elderly, their perception of the occurrence of discriminatory acts, and try to understand whether there are differences in the perception of the elderly in rural and urban areas of Covilha and Fundão. Applying a specific instruments, the "Ageism Survey" designed by Erdman B. Palmore, it will be tried to understand the perception of social discrimination of the elderly. The sample will consist of elderly residents in various regions of Beira Interior, Covilha, Fundão, Alpedrinha, Vila do Carvalho, Belmonte, Teixoso, Tortosendo, Canhoso, Village of St. Francis of Assisi, Iron, São Jorge da Beira, Unhais da Serra, Boidobra, Caria, Village of Joannes, January Cima and Silvares.
