Abstract(s)
In this study we aimed to identify spatial-temporal tendencies between teams and groups of players, which discriminate the defensive performance in football. Three competitive matches from the English Premier League were analyzed, and a total of 91 defensive patterns of play were registered. The sequences were divided according to the defensive success. The sequences registered as defensive success were identified also classified according to the position in the field where the action occurred: Intermediate Zone (ZI) or Defensive Zone (ZD). For the purpose of the analysis, defensive performance was evaluated on two distinct levels: collective and group level. For the collective level were considered the variables: distance between geometric centres of both teams, length and width ratio between teams. Group level focused the analysis on the spatial-temporal relations between the players involved on the defensive process nearest to the ball. For that it was measured the values of interpersonal distances and angles between ball carrier and defenders, both defenders and ball receiver and immediate defender. Results demonstrated that defensive success was constrained at collective level, by an increase on the ratio of width between teams, and in a group level by a reduction of distances between ball carrier and defenders, both defenders and ball receiver and immediate defender. For the interpersonal angles, higher angles between players were related with defensive success in comparison with offensive success. A decrease on interpersonal distance values were also observed when the passes occurred in intermediate zone (ZI) to the defensive zone (ZD). These results suggest that the analysis of spatial-temporal tendencies in different relational dimensions (collective and group) allow a greater understanding of the behaviour of the players on the field and thereby improving the intervention of the coach during the training process.
