Abstract(s)
Background: Recreational drugs are increasingly sought after by healthy individuals, not only for entertainment purposes, but also to improve cognition and increase creativity. These drugs have an enormous therapeutic potential as serotonergic and hallucinogenic drugs, yet they have been neglected due to the social and political stigmatization. They are now emerging as promising therapies for various psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety and drug dependence, as the treatments available have not been showing desirable results and, in some patients, are associated with several adverse effects. However, the dangers linked to these drugs have to be considered and their neurobiological effects must be analyzed. This literature review focuses especially on the therapeutic applications of lysergic acid diethylamide due to its historical and clinical relevance. Objectives: To review existing scientific evidence on the neurobiological aspects, clinical applications, physiological effects and safety of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide. Methods: Analysis of articles indexed in Pubmed and Google Scholar databased by March 2019, using the keywords "hallucinogens", "lysergic acid diethylamide", "LSD and neurotoxicity", "LSD and neurobiology", "psychedelic therapy" microdosing LSD "," LSD and pharmacology ", etc. Results: Lysergic acid diethylamide, a serotonergic agonist with potential effects on neuroplasticity, can be safely administered in controlled settings, and studies suggest that it has antidepressive, anxiolytic, and antiaddictive effects Conclusion: The therapeutic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide are promising and useful to develop new therapeutic agents, while also being tools to better understand psychiatric disorders. These findings are preliminary and it's imperative for studies to be carried out, in order to evaluate their eficacy and toxicity.
