Abstract(s)
do mundo.
no dia-a-dia.
Introduction: In the last years, social networks have gained increasing popularity worldwide and have acquired an important role in people's daily lives. There are several social networking sites, but globally these allow for constant communication, relationships and share of content and ideas at any time and with people from anywhere in the world. Adolescents and young people are the generation that most uses social networks on a daily basis. However, little is still said about the impact that social networks have in this age group. Since adolescence is a crucial period of physical, cognitive and psychosocial development, it is therefore necessary to assess consequences of these tools on adolescentsâ health and well-being. . Objective: Mental health is currently one of the most discussed topics in society and affects many adolescents, which is why identifying preventive measures is essential. For this reason and because it is a recent and little discussed topic, the present dissertation constitutes an extensive literature review about the most common negative effects that arise with the use of social networks in adolescence. . Methods: By using the search engines PubMed and b-on and the keywords "social networking", "mental health" and "adolescence", 29 articles were selected after applying specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. . Results: The five most prevalent themes were studied, such as "Depression, Anxiety, Suicide and Self-injurious Behaviors", "Cyberbullying", "Sleep", "Self-esteem and Selfimage" and "Addictive Behavior to Social Networking Sites". . Conclusion: Although few studies related to adolescents were found, most presented similar conclusions, that is, they reported an association between the use of social networking sites and the presence of some indicator of psychological malaise in the five themes studied. Therefore, I think it is crucial that more studies should be done in the future in order to better understand the consequences that social networking sites can have in adolescence and following stages of life.
