Abstract(s)
The 2019 coronavirus pandemic disease (COVID-19) is having a profound effect on all aspects of health. Beyond respiratory system disorders it impacts mental health through panic disorder, anxiety, depression and fear. To manage the overall impact of the disease, it is critical to know all of its repercussions, and understanding the individual psychological response to COVID-19 is essential. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), a seven-item instrument developed in Iran, assesses the fear triggered by the new coronavirus and has been validated for different countries. This study aims to validate the FCV-19S for the Portuguese population. The scale was administered to 1203 portuguese adults, with ages between 18 and 93 years (SD =17,47). Confirmatory factor analysis was carried out on the initial model proposed by the authors of the FCV-19S. A good alpha measure of internal consistency and model fit indices showed a good adjustment. Further analysis revealed that the portuguese version of the scale has good psychometric properties. Concurrent validity was supported by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)and the Vulnerability to Disease Scale (PVDS). This scale is an instrument that may facilitate the understanding of the impact of COVID19 on mental health and even understand how this impact may influence the behaviours associated with the pandemic in the Portuguese population. The FCV-19S thus allows us to identify the problem and act accordingly, not only in the current pandemic, but also in future pandemic situations, through the development of preventive measures and early intervention strategies.
