Abstract(s)
DP=1.827)] e 58 que nunca praticaram voluntariado [ 77.6 % do sexo masculino e 22.4 do sexo
The present study has as main objective to study the motivation for volunteering and the personal growth initiative in higher education students. As specific objectives, it is intended, in a sample of university students who have already practiced volunteer activities at least once: 1) Analyze the differences between the genders in terms of motivation for volunteering; 2) Compare the motivations for volunteering according to the time (number of days) spent on volunteer activities; (3) Compare the personal growth initiative according to the time (number of days) spent on volunteer activities and; (4) Analyze the relationship between motivations for volunteering and the perception of personal growth initiative. Finally, an attempt was made to compare the perception of personal growth initiative between the group of students who have already volunteered and the second group that never had this experience. 177 students from the University of Beira Interior and the University of Madeira participated in the study, of whom 119 have already volunteered at least once [75.6% male and 23.6% female (aged 18 to 36 years, ( M = 20.87 SD = 1.827)], and 58 who never practiced volunteering [77.6% male and 22.4 female (aged between 18 and 36 years old, (M = 20.93 SD = 1,365)]. The instruments applied were the Portuguese version of the Inventory of Motivations for Volunteering (IMV; Clary & Snyder, 1998) and the Personal Growth Initiative Scale (EICP-II; Robitschek & Keyes, 2009). The results revealed that students who practiced more days of volunteering exhibited a motivation in the values function. The intentional behavior dimension of the personal growth initiative, positively predicts the values, experience, growth and career functions. The dimensions of the personal growth initiative didn’t show statistically significant differences in the two groups of students.
