Abstract(s)
Nowadays we are witnessing a growing trend when it comes to news and investigations that point to a failure in clinical monitoring in correctional facilities. This study aims to explore aspects associated with clinical disorders as well as personality dimensions that have received little attention in the literature, that are of potential interest for a better understanding of the individual behind the crime and who is currently serving a sentence in prison. In order to accomplish this, we aimed to explore, within the Portuguese prison population, using a sample of 59 individuals from the prisons of Castelo Branco, Covilhã, Torres Novas and Leiria, the presence of alexithymia and components of the recently new term called the Dark Triad, i.e. Machiavellianism, Narcissism and Psychopathy as well as to investigate the potential links between them and with sociodemographic variables of interest. To carry out this goal, the application of a sociodemographic questionnaire and of the TAS-20 and SD3 scales was necessary. The analysis that was carried out revealed relationships of interest and statistically significant differences depending on variables such as age, clinical monitoring and use of medication and especially the existence of strong evidence of the existence of previously referred dimensions in this population, which constitute a reason for their investigation to become increasingly important and necessary in the future, especially for its implications in the development of therapeutic programs.
