Abstract(s)
"Adaptation of Scleral Lenses, Accommodation Insufficiency, and Suspected Myopic Macular Schisis,” this report encapsulates the knowledge and skills gained during a six-month internship at Optocentro Opticians, located in Marquês de Pombal. The internship, which commenced in mid-December 2022, was an integral component of a master’s degree in Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Beira Interior. During this time, the practical skills were enhanced and the knowledge in the field of Optometry was expanded, specifically in the adaptation of contact lenses, evaluation of complementary exams such as optical coherence tomography, topographies, retinographies, perimetry, and the analysis of binocular and accommodative dysfunction cases. The report is organized into three distinct clinical cases. In the first, a patient with keratoconus was examined, a common condition that causes corneal protrusion and usually results in reduced visual acuity. In this case, the adaptation of scleral contact lenses was used as treatment. The second case focuses on a patient with accommodation insufficiency, an accommodative dysfunction that results in problems with near vision. The patient had a history of unsuccessful treatment for accommodation insufficiency with near positive addition, leading to the implementation of visual therapy. The third case explores a pathology of the ocular fundus, a suspected myopic macular schisis. A brief discussion of the characteristics of this condition is presented, followed by an appropriate referral for an ophthalmological evaluation.
