Abstract(s)
The revolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), especially with the internet, caused a profound transformation in the business models of journalism. The loss of publicity, the new habits of the audience, the entry of new competitors and questions about credibility generated a crisis in journalism that was aggravated in the regional media, which had difficulties in making the transition to digital and today face challenges in becoming established in an increasingly globalized and digital market. This doctoral thesis discusses ways for proximity journalism to face the crisis of communication business models. The discussion is deepened on one of the alternatives, the cooperation between means of communication, competitors or not. It is the idea that united newspapers can offer a bigger and better product at lower costs. Media cooperation, which can converge formats through the internet, also operates in the commercial and administrative sphere of the media, as together, they can have more strength to seek partners, publicity and resources. Based on a literature review of all journalism movements that operated in a network, whether with other media or with civil society, this thesis firstly develops a concept map of of network proximity journalism. Then, a method is presented for newspapers, radios and other local media to be able to carry out network projects. Case studies of media associations that have network projects and a proposal for a group of Portuguese regional media validated the method developed under the concept of network proximity journalism.
