Abstract(s)
Atualmente, estudos in vitro e in
The following dissertation is included in the curricular unit “Curricular Internship of the Integrated Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences”. This work consists of three distinct parts: the first refers to the bibliographical research work, a review of the literature within the scope of the phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of Rubia Genus, as well as its potential application in traditional medicine; a second part that addresses the report of the curricular internship I carried out in a hospital pharmacy; and a third part relating to the report on the curricular internship carried out in a community pharmacy. The first chapter is entitled “The Rubia Genus: uses in traditional medicine, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties”. Rubia is one of the Rubiaceae family kind, and is distributed throughout Portugal. Since always, plants have been used in the treatment and prevention of certain pathologies, and there are records of the use of Rubia extracts. Currently, in vitro and in vivo studies prove a large number of its pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumor activity, among others, presented later. The studies are unanimous in considering that such properties are mainly due to the anthraquinone compounds found in Rubia species, such as alizarin and purpurin. Given the growing demand for medicinal plants in the treatment of chronic diseases or in the context of antimicrobial resistance, the search for alternatives for use in humans becomes crucial, without discarding the issue of safety. The second chapter refers to the internship in the hospital pharmacy, carried out at Hospital Sousa Martins, in Guarda, for a total of 273 hours, while the third chapter refers to the internship in the community pharmacy, at Farmácia Viriato, in Viseu. In these chapters, some activities I carried out are described, as well as how the services work.
