  • Validation of the ISS-QUAL and the role of gender, age and education on it service quality in the public sector

    Public organizations have invested heavily in information technology (IT) and have created internal specialized IT services departments which must be managed from the perspective of the provision of services. The people involved in these organizations can be grouped by demographic characteristics such as gender, age and level of formal education. Thus, the study has two objectives. The first is to test, in the context of the public sector, the validity of the ISS-QUAL, a new scale developed to measure the IT service quality provided by internal IT departments. The second objective is to analyze the role of the variables of gender, age and the level of education of public servants on the perception of IT service quality provided by internal departments. For this purpose, we used structural equation modeling to perform a confirmatory factorial analysis with a sample of 879 IT users, as well as to identify the role of gender, age and level of users’ formal education on perceived service quality. The results confirm the validity and the high explanatory power of the ISS-QUAL within the scope of public organizations, and indicate that the demographic characteristics of public servants differentially affect service quality factors. The study presents the implications of the results for researchers in the field and for managers of internal IT departments in the public sector.
  • The role of information technology capabilities and innovativeness in organizational performance

    The general objective that guided this thesis is to identify the integrated role of information technology capabilities and innovativeness in organizational performance in the public sector. We conducted the present research study in two major stages to achieve this purpose, guided by research questions and specific objectives. We extensively reviewed the scientific literature on innovativeness and IT capabilities applied to the business area first. For this purpose, we used several technological tools to scan several units of analysis underlying each area to identify the origins, conceptual and intellectual structures, and the main active research fronts, indicating open opportunities for the evolution of knowledge. In general, the results showed that knowledge production on the themes is transversal, relating strongly to other topics, such as strategic management, organizational performance, knowledge management and market orientation (innovativeness) and organizational performance, strategic management, and value (IT capabilities). Both themes are recent in the literature, and researchers’ interest proliferates. In addition, there are numerous research opportunities available to future researchers, both about each theme taken in isolation or combined. The knowledge gathered in the first stage was the basis for the conduction of the second stage, whose approach, markedly empirical, sought to identify the nature of the relationships between the central organizational phenomena of this study (innovativeness and IT capabilities), associated with other under-explored elements in the literature, such as IT reconfiguration capacity and IT human capital. To this end, we analyzed the data provided by 258 Brazilian public institutions from the most diverse segments, collected through a survey conducted with the highest information technology managers. We performed the analyses by applying structural equation models based on covariance (CB-SEM). Overall, the results indicated that the reconfiguration IT capability must be listed among the IT capabilities of public organizations, and innovativeness and IT capabilities play an essential role in the performance of these organizations. The results also indicated that the IT human capital is an antecedent of the IT organizational capabilities. Finally, the results showed that IT capabilities, in turn, have a direct positive effect on organizational performance and are indirectly mediated by innovativeness. The study contributes to the evolution of the literature in IT and innovation to the extent that it helps fill the gap in the lack of studies that use advanced quantitative techniques of bibliometric character to analyze the high-impact scientific production available. In addition, the study presents, in detail, all the steps followed by the study, including the combined use of analysis tools, to allow replication by future researchers. The study innovates and contributes to the advancement of the literature in IT and innovation by identifying that IT capabilities are essential antecedents of organizational innovativeness and the role of IT reconfiguration capability and IT human capital on IT organizational capabilities. Finally, this thesis reveals several research opportunities available and recommended by several recently produced high-impact research. This study presents managers with recommendations on creating and developing more effective IT teams with more comprehensive skills in the practical field. In addition, the chapter highlights the need for IT managers to dedicate themselves to developing the capability of teams with the expertise to gather, integrate and implement IT resources, with a focus on meeting the needs of organizational processes. Finally, managers are presented with evidence that creating an environment favorable to innovation and supported by information technology is crucial for achieving better corporate results.
  • Antecedents of entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial intentions: evidence from Brazil

    The general objective of the present study is to identify the antecedents of the entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial intentions of 266 potential entrepreneurs, represented by students of the degree courses in Business Administration and Accounting Sciences in brazilians higher education institutions. For this purpose, as specific objectives we sought to identify whether entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial behavior are seen as different career options by students, as well as understanding the degree of relative importance for students of the attributes of property, income expectation, extra work tolerance, desire for autonomy and risk of income variation. For the data analysis, we specified structural equation models, with a confirmatory factorial analysis, as well as using the conjoint analysis approach of the attributes selected for the study. The results indicate that the constructive entrepreneurial intentions and intrapreneurial intentions are perceived as different career options by the students. The results also indicate that the most valued attribute by the respondents to define professional choice is income expectation and the least valued is the tolerance to the accomplishment of additional effort. Finally, the results point out that the income expectation variable is antecedent of the entrepreneurial intentions, and no other significant relationships were detected.
  • Do Individual Characteristics Influence the Types of Technostress Reported by Workers?

    Based on the perspective that the diversity of the workforce has implications for attitudes and behaviors at the individual and group levels, this article examines the role of individual differences related to gender, age, formal education, and length of professional experience in the levels of stress caused by the use of information technology (IT) in the daily activities of workers. This phenomenon, termed in the literature as technostress, is studied by identifying and measuring the factors that create technostress (the technostress creator factors: techno-uncertainty, techno-invasion, techno-overload, and techno- complexity). The technostress phenomenon is related to the most varied types of disorders in workers and losses in organizations, such as fatigue, dissatisfaction, anxiety, and reduced productivity. To achieve the goal of this research, we applied structural equation models in a sample of 927 questionnaires completed by 14 different Brazilian public institutions that were distributed among all regions of the country and that were strongly dependent on IT for their main business processes. The results indicate that workers’ demographic characteristics relate to one another differently and specifically with the various forms of manifestation of technostress. More precisely, older workers or those with longer professional experience reported greater difficulties with the increase of technological complexity for the execution of tasks (techno-complexity). Women reported being subject to higher levels of techno- complexity and techno-uncertainty, while men indicated feeling greater effects from techno-overload and techno-invasion. We did not detect differences related to the levels of formal education of workers. This study presents the implications of the results for theory and for the everyday life of modern organizations that are increasingly dependent on the use of IT.
