Abstract(s)
Purpose: To evaluate the existence of a significant statistical difference between the Quality of Life (QOL) and the School Performance of adolescents with AspergerÂŽs Syndrome (AS), compared to adolescents without known neuro-psychiatric disorder. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study between 1) cases: adolescents with Aspergerâs Syndrome aged between 13 and 20 years registered in Viseuâs APPDA or APSA; and 2) controls: adolescents of the same age group attending primary or secondary school in Escola SecundĂĄria Afonso de Albuquerque. To simplify dataÂŽs collection, it was created a questionnaire named âQuestionĂĄrio de Qualidade de Vida e Rendimento Escolar na AdolescĂȘnciaâ, structured in 3 parts: Demographic Data; School Performance; and Quality of Life. Results: The average age of the adolescents with AS was 17,00±2,55 years, with male gender predominance (60%). School Performance: The number of school failure was higher, on average, in the casesâ group (cases: 0,80±0,18, controls: 0,28±0,57); the student selfperception was lower, on average, in the adolescents with AS (cases: Suficient, 3,20±0,45, controls: Good, 3,88±0,75). Quality of Life: adolescents with AS, similarly to controls, showed a Good overall perception of QOL (cases: 4,00±0,00, controls: 4,02±0,62) and they were Satisfied with their overall perception of health (cases: 4,40±0,89, controls: 4,14±0,90). Conclusion: Adolescents with AS didnÂŽt show a significant impairment in their overall QOL. However, they showed a higher rate of schoolÂŽs failure, and they were classified, as students, in a lower category, when compared to the group of controls.
