Em muitas sociedades pré-industriais a transformação de matéria-prima em tecido é tarefa de mulheres. Habilidade e destreza nestas actividades conferem prestígio a uma mulher, tanto perante outras mulheres como na sociedade em geral.
Nesta comunicação cita-se e descreve-se algumas técnicas que são utilizadas em sociedades asiáticas, na fiação, na tecelagem e na tinturaria.
Nos países do Sueste Asiático, tecer e o tecido estão estreitamente ligados a forças sobrenaturais. Reconhece-se a actuação de forças espirituais que ajudam no processo de tecelagem. Este processo tem conotações simbólicas e é, por vezes, metáfora de actividades tipicamente masculinas. O produto - o tecido - tem em diversos casos um valor ritual.
In many non-industrial societies, the transformation of raw material into cloth is woman’s work. Ability and skill in these activities give a woman prestige, in front of other women as well as in society in general. In this paper some of the techniques of spinning, weaving and dyeing, used in Asian societies, will be mentioned and described. In countries of Southeast Asia, weaving and cloth are closely connected to supernatural forces. The action of spiritual forces that help in the weaving process is well known. This process has symbolic connotations and at times is a metaphor of typically masculine activities. The product - the cloth - has in many cases a ritual value.
