Abstract(s)
“exercise” “fitness”, “burnout”, “medical students” e “medicine students”.
individualmente avaliada recorrendo à checklist do Center for Evidence-Based
Management (CEBMa).
superiores a 30% (intervalo: 18,2-75,2%).
as pesquisas futuras abracem as recomendações delineadas, elevando a qualidade
metodológica e promovendo um avanço substancial no conhecimento desta área.
Introduction: Burnout is a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion, caused by prolonged involvement in highly stressful situations related to work or professional responsibilities. It is more prevalent in professions that involve a high level of emotional demand and responsibility, such as healthcare. Medical students are particularly at risk of burnout due to various factors related to their training. It is important to recognise the early signs of burnout and look for effective strategies to prevent or treat this condition. In this regard, the role of physical activity is currently recognised as one of the most important protective factors. Objectives: This systematic review of the literature aims to evaluate the relationship between physical activity and burnout in medical students. In addition, it aims to investigate the influence of physical activity on the etiological web of this syndrome, contributing to improving the quality of life and mental health of this population. Methods: The articles were identified through a search on the PubMed platform, restricted to the period from 2010 to 2023, whose keywords were "physical activity", "exercise" "fitness", "burnout", "medical students" and "medicine students". Only cross-sectional or cohort studies that measured and evaluated the relationship between physical activity/exercise and burnout in medical students were included. The quality of the studies was individually assessed using the Centre for Evidence-Based Management (CEBMa) checklist. Results: The search included 17 articles, covering a total of 10.455 participants from 14 different countries. Most of the studies showed burnout prevalence rates of over 30% (range: 18,2-75,2%). Most of these found that physical activity/exercise was negatively associated with burnout and all its dimensions. dimensions of burnout. Some studies found an association between this variable and only some of the dimensions of burnout. Discussion/Conclusions: The results of this systematic review consistently highlight the association between physical activity and burnout in medical students. These data emphasise the importance of considering physical activity as an integral part of the wellbeing and health of this population. The cross-sectional nature of the studies included, the heterogeneity of the assessment instruments used, as well as the self-reporting in obtaining the data were the main limitations identified in the studies analysed, limiting the robustness of their conclusions. Guidelines for future research include prioritising the longitudinal nature of the studies (allowing causality to be inferred), standardising the assessment instruments to be used and adopting alternative data collection methods (minimising overreliance on self-reporting). It is essential that future research embraces the recommendations outlined, raising methodological quality and promoting a substantial advance in knowledge in this area.
