Abstract(s)
In the academic year 2018-2019 during the first semester of project unit V, the project “Construir o Molde” was prepared, which was later submitted to the competition “Prémio Universidades Trienal de Lisboa Millennium bcp” organized by the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. This contest, already concluded, aimed to design a Community and Interpretive Center for Marvila, Lisbon. In this project, two scales related to the intervention site were required: I) the collective scale, which is within a specific metropolitan dimension of the future condition of the site; II) a community scale, this in a domestic dimension, paying special attention to the human dimension. The project delivered was based on these same scales, presenting itself in an object that creates two distinct spaces, one directed to the community, focused on the daily needs of its residents and another focused on the program more specific to the collective scale. As a result of this choice of scales on the place of intervention allied to a perception by the author of this dissertation that the defined program is not the most appropriate, we tried to understand the reason for choosing these same scales by the Architecture Triennale of Lisbon and find out if the project carried out corresponded to these assumptions, from a more rigorous analysis of the place. The theme of emptiness played a relevant role in the conception of this project, functioning as a generating matrix of the concept, creating a volume that defines several spaces, in a similar approach to the creation of molds. Thus, with this dissertation, we analyze the potentialities of empty space and explore how it can be an integral part in the design of the architectural project. For this, authors and projects are analyzed where emptiness is an integral part of their concepts, also exploring the conceptual component of an architecture project, focusing on some of the different ways of approaching it.
