Abstract(s)
The present thesis, of projectual nature, aims to recover and present, through a film, an installation, a photo album and an author book, an audiovisual collection of two families in Covilhã, with records from the past during the 20th and 21st centuries, through various old and current media, revealing the importance of history, its archive and its use for artistic creation. It also intends to think and place this type of film within the existing cinematographic genres, namely, the documentary and the essay film, concluding with the proposal of creating a hypothetical new branch, the memory-film. In order to carry out this thesis, it was necessary to resort to various methodologies, namely an archeology and archival of the media, which began with an investigation and search for cinematographic materials and photographic records in both families, followed by an analysis, recovery and digitalization of family archives, as well as subsequent file maintenance and organization. In addition, cinematographic and artistic knowledge were applied for the elaboration of a film and, to complement, an installation, a photo album and an author's book, giving this project an artistically inter and transmedia dimension. The thesis, divided into three parts – Chapter 1: Opening Doors; Chapter 2: The creative process of Quinta-Casa; Chapter 3: Other Means, Other Memories – presents the different stages of the process that led to them. The film Quinta-Casa is the result of an artistic and research motivation, achieved through the combination of current filmic memories, with sound, film and photographic archives, found and recovered, from the years 1910 to 2021. The possibility of showing the process that, sometimes literally, reveal what was inside this archive and understand the interconnections that exist between them, transported this archive to an artistic and scientific environment. In the conclusion possible future projects are revealed, as the contributions that this work can have in – and beyond – academic and artistic circles.
