Abstract(s)
Disparities between economically developed and underdeveloped areas have increased in the last few years. Given the current situation at national and international level, entrepreneurship and innovation play an important role in business to generate development. The present study aims to analyse the impact of entrepreneurship and innovation in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as a tool for growth and development in the regions where they are established. For this purpose data was collected by interviewing managers of six SMEs located in the districts of Castelo Branco and Guarda, Portugal and data was analysed by text cross-referencing. The results show that entrepreneurship and innovation are fundamental for SMEs. These phenomena are reflected through new products, manufacturing processes, design, new technologies and market expansion. Entrepreneurship and innovation are vital to the maintenance of SMEs and for their growth in inland regions. Empirical evidence also show that derived from entrepreneurship and innovation, SMEs can contribute to regional development by creating new jobs, generate new businesses and more trade and therefore increasing social value. This study also has implications for theory and practice in the context of SMEs in economically disadvantaged regions. As a contribution to the literature, this study exposes several themes to the advancement of knowledge on the phenomenon of entrepreneurship and innovation particularly in the SME sector, but also an implication for the theory in the regional development. Finally, entrepreneurship and innovation strategies also contribute for the survival and development of SMEs. They are fundamental as they stimulate competitiveness and the development of the regions. In this sense, this research shows the role of SMEs in the poorest regions of Portugal and, in particular, in the Beira Interior region.
