Abstract(s)
As redes
The image has today an important function because we live in the era of smartphones, tablets and computers; of instant information full of images and multimedia content. For all newspapers, image is very important. Most of front newspapers are occupied by images. And on the internet, the news websites have news always with images or multimedia content, such as videos for example. Very often, the reports of war / terrorism are important examples of the power and impact that the image has on audience. The first reports of war appeared first in the Bible and then later in paintings that described spaces of war. Journalism has evolved and the first printed newspapers were created. In 1821, appears the first figure of the "war correspondent." William Howard Russell is an Irish journalist who in 1854 was the first special journalist sent to Crimean War. Today, we live surrounded of information coming from newspapers, television and radio. But also the social networks - like Facebook and Instagram - have became sources of information. Now, journalists need to know how to select and understand what is real or not. Journalists are responsible for looking at news and spread it to the public. It is a profession regulated by the ethical code where the truth and credibility are important characteristics. Nowadays, professionals have specialized courses to access the profession. But in fact these courses only started in Portugal in 1979. The news should be a public utility, that offers new information to the audience and report accurately only events of interest. To transmit events of interest gatekeepers select the most relevant and important information to be transmitted. Journalits are the ones who make a pre-selection of information. And here it adds the important role of images. Now a journalist needs to collect the necessary information and needs to find the true image that captures the attention of his audience and that shows the whole reality of the places.
