Portalegre é uma cidade do Norte Alentejano caracterizada por uma formação geológica montanhosa
sendo a história imprecisa quanto ao seu início como povoado. É uma cidade fronteiriça que deve a
sua fundação inicial a D. Afonso III, a sua consolidação e designação como terra da coroa a D. Dinis,
embora seja D. João III a figura mais apreciada na cidade por ter oficializado Portalegre como cidade
e diocese.
A cidade de Portalegre iniciou a sua industrialização no século XVIII com a Real Fábrica de Lanifícios,
mais tarde com a corticeira Robinson – Fábrica da Cortiça, e já no século XX a Manufactura de
Tapeçarias, entre outras indústrias de menores dimensões, o que criava em Portalegre muitos postos
de trabalho, tornando a cidade cheia de vida. Embora a maioria da população fosse constituída por
trabalhadores fabris, as classes mais altas estavam presentes e ativas na sociedade portalegrense,
criando diversos equipamentos de lazer para a cidade. Foi um grupo de senhores de famílias
reconhecidas, no final da década de 50, que iniciou o desenvolvimento do Clube de Ténis de
Portalegre, sendo apenas no início da década de 70 a sua inauguração. É esse edifício que se propõe
estudar e recuperar nesta dissertação.
Num local isolado, na serra de Portalegre o edifício surge com uma arquitetura singular e
inconfundível, sendo a sua principal característica a cobertura em paraboloide hiperbólico simples.
Foi na sua época um local cheio de vida, com atividades como o ténis, o tiro ao prato e salas de jogo.
Albergava diversos eventos, passando na década de 80 a discoteca Infinito, conhecida a nível nacional.
Atualmente o edifício encontra-se desativado.
Edifícios semelhantes e da mesma época são escassos, com apenas dois exemplos nos Estados Unidos
da América. No século XXI o tipo de cobertura paraboloide hiperbólica é bastante mais frequente e
utiliza materiais mais simples de serem manuseados.
A intenção desta dissertação é pois uma proposta de projeto de recuperação da antiga sede do Clube
de Ténis de Portalegre, prevendo a sua reativação como clube de ténis, local de lazer, convívio e
eventos criando ainda um novo espaço destinado a alojamento para desportistas e público em geral.

It is a border town that owes its initial foundation to King Afonso III, its consolidation and designation as crown land to King Dinis, although it is King João III the most appreciated figure in the city for having made Portalegre official as a city and diocese. The city of Portalegre began its industrialization in the eighteenth century with the Royal Wool Factory, later with the Corticeira Robinson - Cork Factory, and already in the twentieth century the Tapestry Manufacture, among other smaller industries which created in Portalegre many jobs and making the city full of life. Although the majority of the population consisted of factory workers, the upper classes were present and active in the “portalegrense” society, creating various leisure facilities for the city. It was a group of well-known family lords at the end of the 50's who started the development of the Portalegre Tennis Club and it was only in the beginning of the 70's that it was inaugurated. It is this building that is proposed to study and rehabilitate in this dissertation. In an isolated place in the Serra de Portalegre the building appears with a unique and unmistakable architecture, its main feature being the simple hyperbolic paraboloid cover. It was in its time a place full of life, with activities like tennis, shooting plates and game rooms. It hosted several events, it was transformed in a dance club in the 80’s, the disco Infinito, well-known at national level. The building is currently in an unset state. Similar buildings of the same time are scarce with only two examples in the United States of America. In the 21st century the type of hyperbolic paraboloid cover is much more frequent and uses simpler materials to be handled. The aim of this dissertation is therefore a proposal for a project to rehabilitate the former head office of the Tennis Club of Portalegre, providing its reactivation as a tennis club, leisure, socializing and events facility, creating a new space as accommodation for sportsmen and the public in general.
