Abstract(s)
This work wants to analyze the action of Public Relations in the modernization of Portuguese unions. The parallel study of the contexts in which that modernization occurs reflects the natural development of the central subject chosen, by evaluating the phenomena that affects practices in communication, such as globalization, State transfiguration, new movements arrive, and labour transitions. So as to find correspondence in that hybrid subject, and to process it, this study embraces a formula that works with methodological triangulation, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, using surveys and direct observation, both participation and non-participation, from two public protest events, coordinated from two different associative structures (an union and a new social movement). To sum up: it is possible to study the role of Public Relations in the modernization of Portuguese unions, in a wide sociological perspective, analyzing both internal and external communication, some of the political circumstances, and all the near social environment, where some of the rival action can be reflected, either those from the State transition role, or those being suggested by new movements. Thus, some of the key topics of this thesis will be consider the differences between the traditionalism of the union and the new communication formula of new movement, the political affectivity and the absence of leadership and conservative unions and new movements.
