Abstract(s)
Currently, prevails the image of aged and aging predominantly negative, where are attributed images and stereotypes to the elderly predominantly negative, existing the risk that these images and stereotypes are internalized by the elderly, conditioning its perception of aging. The purpose of this study is to know the images and stereotypes that institutionalized and non institutionalized elderly of Castelo Branco possess about aging. The instruments used were a socio-demographic questionnaire and the ImAges scale (Sousa, Cerqueira & Galante, 2008). The subjects that participated were 120 elderly, with ages between 65 and 99 years old, between which 60 (50%) were institutionalized, and 60 (50%) were not institutionalized. The results indicate that the institutionalized elderly present more images and stereotypes of aging and aged (M=106,6; DP=9,99) comparatively with the non institutionalized elderly (M=102,8; DP=12,4), however, these differences are not statistical significant (t (118) = -1,85; p = 0,06). Although, in the dimension Dependence, Sadness and Obsolete, the institutionalized elderly present more negative images and stereotypes about aging (M=51,8; DP=6,01), relatively to the elderly that weren´t institutionalized (M=49,0; DP=7,85), verifying significant statistical differences (t (118) = -2,16; p <0,05). In the factor Maturity, Activity and Affections, also with significant differences (t (118) = 2,04; p <0,05), the non institutionalized elderly present more positive images and stereotypes (M=20,2;DP=3,28), compared with the institucionlized elderly (M=19,0; DP=3,310). The results indicate, that institutionalized elderly present an image of aged and aging predominantly negative, relatively to the elderly not institutionalized.
