dc.description.abstract	Actualmente, prevalece uma imagem de idoso e de envelhecimento predominantemente negativa, onde são atribuídos ao idoso imagens e estereótipos predominantemente negativos, existindo o risco de que essas imagens e estereótipos sejam internalizados pelo idoso, condicionando a sua percepção de envelhecimento. O objectivo desta investigação é conhecer as imagens e estereótipos que os idosos institucionalizados e não institucionalizados do Distrito de Castelo Branco possuem sobre o envelhecimento. Os instrumentos utilizados foram um questionário sóciodemográfico e a escala ImAges (Sousa, Cerqueira & Galante, 2008). Participaram neste estudo 120 idosos, com idades compreendidas entre os 65 e os 99 anos, entre os quais 60 (50%) idosos são institucionalizados, e 60 (50%) são não institucionalizados. Os resultados indicam que os idosos institucionalizados apresentam mais estereótipos e imagens de idoso e envelhecimento (M=106,6; DP=9,99) comparativamente aos idosos não institucionalizados (M=102,8; DP=12,4), contudo, estas diferenças não são estatisticamente significativas (t (118) = -1,85; p = 0,06). No entanto, numa análise mais específica, no factor Dependência, Tristeza e Antiquado, os idosos institucionalizados apresentam mais estereótipos e imagens negativas (M=51,8;DP=6,01), relativamente aos idosos não institucionalizados (M=49,0;DP=7,85), verificando-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas (t (118) = -2,16; p <0,05). No factor Maturidade, Actividade e Afectividade, também com diferenças significativas (t (118) = 2,04; p <0,05), os idosos não institucionalizados apresentam mais imagens e estereótipos positivos (M=20,2;DP=3,28), relativamente aos idosos institucionalizados (M=19,0; DP=3,310). Os resultados indicam, que os idosos institucionalizados apresentam uma imagem do idoso e do envelhecimento predominantemente negativa, relativamente aos idosos não institucionalizados.	por

The results indicate, that institutionalized elderly present an image of aged and aging predominantly negative, relatively to the elderly not institutionalized.
