Abstract(s)
In the artistic panorama of Portugal in the 17th and 18th centuries, the bishops were one of the main actors whose patronage is still largely unstudied. In this context, we find people who, in their time, stood out for their enormous intellect and erudition: among these figures, stands out D. João de Mendonça, bishop who governed the diocese of Guarda for twenty and three years and seven months, and whose legacy is mainly associated to the Jardins do Paço Episcopal de Castelo Branco. Based on the analysis of the posthumous inventory, and on the principle tell us what you read, we will tell you who you are, we will unveil the content of its extensive and valuable library, which reveals a man with a worldview of the human existence.
