Abstract(s)
queer no espaço-tempo contemporùneo.
Based on the question of what characterizes contemporary queer cinema, this thesis proposes an analysis of the filmographies of directors Andrew Haigh, CĂ©line Sciamma, and Dee Rees, in search of the aspects that may define a queer narrative/aesthetic/project in film today. Taking as reference B. Ruby Richâs seminal work in identifying New Queer Cinema during the 1990s, the investigation uses the methodology proposed by the Filmmakersâ Theory in order to grasp in these directorsâ discourses and movies how the current production elaborates and reflects on the modes of queer existence in contemporary time-space. To that end, the analysis focuses on three specific features: Haighâs Weekend; Sciammaâs Portrait of a Lady on Fire; and Reesâs Pariah. By putting them in dialogue with each other, as well as with the filmmakersâ reflections and other movies, and with the concepts of the Queer Theory, the research shows how the three directors shape their films around gay and lesbian protagonists who narrativize their personal experiences, through artistic creation, as a way of reinventing and resisting the homo and heteronormative limitations of the realities in which they operate. Through the analysis of the mise-en-scĂšne of these creative queers, the thesis tries to come up with a definition of what constitutes a queer act of creation. Based on the proposed concept, it finally argues how several examples of contemporary queer cinema also focus on LGBTQIA+ protagonists who manage to cross and destabilize the limitations of the time-space they are in through the act of self-narrativization and artistic creation.
