- Canções de amor, desejo e perda: os blues em três romances de Toni MorrisonPublication . Mancelos, João deA música afro-americana constitui uma presença recorrente nos romances de Toni Morrison: os blues e o jazz em The Bluest Eye (1970), Jazz (1992) e Love (2003); a música folk em Song of Solomon (1977); as canções de trabalho em Beloved (1987); a música clássica em Tar Baby (1981); e cantos tribais em A Mercy (2008). Neste artigo, focarei os blues, um estilo menos estudado no contexto da produção literária morrisoniana, e que suscita novas leituras nos romances The Bluest Eye (1970), Jazz (1992) e Love (2003). O meu objetivo é responder a várias perguntas essenciais: quais as funções e significados dos blues no conteúdo das narrativas morrisoniana? Como influencia este género o estilo e as estruturas dos romances da autora? A que experiências individuais ou históricas negras se associa? Para abordar estes assuntos, recorrerei à literatura, música e história, compondo, nota a nota, as minhas respostas.
- The construction, destruction and reconfiguration of a community in Toni Morrison’s SulaPublication . Mancelos, João deIn the 19th and 20th centuries, thousands of African-Americans abandoned the southern states and went to the North. The aim of this journey was to escape the persecutions and lynching that darkened each day of the lives of the black people in the South. During this process, they had to learn the ways and customs of the North and had to adapt to a different landscape and climate. In this paper, I intend to study: a) The different attitudes that, in Toni Morrison’s Sula, African-Americans and European-Americans present in relation to the land; b) The tensions and dilemmas that derive from these two opposite perspectives; c) The way in which capitalist progress alters the modus vivendi and the identity of a rural African-American community. In order to do so, I resort to the novel of Toni Morrison and to several interviews she granted, to the work of several specialists in Literary and Cultural Studies, as well as to my own opinion.

- A canção do outro que sou eu: a viagem iniciática de Milkman, em Song of Solomon, de Toni MorrisonPublication . Mancelos, João deO terceiro romance da escritora afro-americana Toni Morrison, vencedora do Prémio Nobel da Literatura em 1993, relata a viagem do negro Milkman ao sul profundo dos EUA. Esse percurso, argumento, assemelha-se menos a uma aventura em busca de um tesouro oculto, e mais a um ritual iniciático, tal como é ainda hoje praticado em diversas tribos africanas e noutras sociedades em pequena escala. Neste artigo, exploro as várias etapas dessa jornada, comparando-a com ritos e mitos: a descida à gruta; o contacto com as histórias e lendas dos antepassados; a caçada masculina; e a epifania através uma canção. O meu objetivo é proporcionar uma visão diferente da viagem de Milkman: a) sugerindo uma leitura inovadora, numa perspetiva antropológica; b) ligando-a a outros percursos, através da intertextualidade que Morrison tece com mitos africanos e lendas greco-romanos. Para tanto, recorro às opiniões de críticos morrisonianos abalizados; a alguns ensaios importantes de especialistas em Antropologia; e às considerações que Morrison tece em diversas entrevistas.
- O baile das palavras negras: a dança como performance ritual no romance Beloved, de Toni MorrisonPublication . Mancelos, João deBeloved, o romance mais conhecido da escritora afro-americana Toni Morrison, Prémio Nobel da Literatura em 1993, recria ficcionalmente uma dança ritual negra, liderada por uma xamã e ex-escrava, Baby Suggs. Neste breve estudo interessa-me: a) evidenciar o carácter performativo da referida cerimónia e os seus objetivos gerais; b) descrever e analisar o modo como Morrison, usando diversas estratégias narrativas e estilísticas, transcreve essa performance, comparando os passos do texto com os passos da dança; c) mostrar que o texto literário em estudo é, afinal, uma mimesis da mimesis, ou seja uma imitação de uma dança que, por sua vez, imita uma realidade de natureza espiritual. Para tanto, recorro à obra Beloved; a ensaios de especialistas em Toni Morrison; aos estudos acerca de danças cerimoniais de diversos antropólogos mundialmente reputados; e, naturalmente, à minha opinião. Daqui resultará uma melhor compreensão do mecanismo criativo; da prática das duas linguagens; do carácter performativo de ambas as artes.
- Uma dentada na Big Apple: jazz, amor e pecado em Toni MorrisonPublication . Mancelos, João deO romance Jazz (1992), da autora negra Toni Morrison, relata as vivências dos afro-americanos no bairro multiétnico de Harlém, em Nova Iorque, durante os agitados anos vinte. Neste artigo, demonstro como a experiência negra na cidade difere da vida nas áreas rurais; analiso a reconfiguração dos hábitos e valores da comunidade; exploro o tema da reconstrução da família e do improviso da identidade negra em Harlém. Para tal, recorro à análise do romance e à opinião de vários especialistas.
- “What kind of evil you got in there?” Memory and psychological trauma in Jonathan Demme’s BelovedPublication . Mancelos, João deIn 1998, Jonathan Demme directed the cinematic adaptation of Toni Morrison's masterpiece Beloved (1987). Both the novel and the film narrate the story of Sethe, an African American slave who risked death to escape from Sweet Home plantation, in Kentucky, in 1873. Sethe suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, due to a series of painful events that include separation from her husband, torture and rape, and culminated with an attempt to kill her children to prevent them from being enslaved again. As a consequence of this ordeal, and like any other PTSD patient, Sethe experiences difficulties in remembering and narrating her memories. She tells her story by altering the chronological order of the events; strategically omitting some relevant facts; distorting others; establishing a hierarchy of importance to the episodes. The goal of this paper is to identify and analyse the film devices used by Demme to recreate Sethe’s process of dealing with traumatic memories and narrating them. Instead of telling the story according to a logical sequence of actions, the film director manipulates time to provide the viewers with an image of how we remember, a complex and multifaceted process. I analyse the film according to four main aspects: the plot, the setting, the characters and the music. All articulate to give an encompassed vision of Sethe’s past, and of slavery as a part of the History that still haunts the US.

- Our traumas, Our hopes: the dynamics of a multicultural community in Toni Morrison’s A MercyPublication . Mancelos, João deSet in Maryland, during the 1680s, A Mercy (2008), Toni Morrison’s most recent novel, approaches the themes of colonization, slavery and multi-ethnic relationship. Three female characters — Florens, an African girl “with the hands of a slave and the feet of a Portuguese lady”; Lina, the only survivor of a tribe decimated by diseases transmitted by Europeans; and Sorrow, the white daughter of a sea captain — live together in a farm owned by an Anglo-Dutch trader. In this multicultural community, they share their traumas and hopes, while trying to understand each other’s individual and ethnic differences. In my paper I intend to examine how these girls’ narratives: a) Allow readers to understand the beginnings of slavery and the roots of racial hatred; b) Reveal the dynamics of the relationship between three females belonging to different ethnic groups; c) Anticipate the dream but also the challenges Abraham Lincoln would face, two centuries later, when he declared that all slaves would be “then, thenceforward, and forever, free”; d) Echo problems related to the interaction with the Other still alive in contemporary USA. In order to approach these subjects, I will resort to a combination of literary and historical approaches, as well as to my own opinion.

Mancelos, João deNesta crítica à tradução portuguesa de O olhar mais azul (The Bluest Eye), romance de estreia da escritora estadunidense Toni Morrison, vencedora do Prémio Nobel da Literatura, em 1993, foco aspetos importantes para compreender o diálogo intercultural entre negros e brancos: a discriminação no seio dos próprios afro-americanos, os estereótipos raciais, a imposição de padrões de beleza euro-americanos, etc. Abordo também as principais estratégias narrativas morrisonianas para relatar uma história pungente e baseada em factos, com destaque para a polifonia narrativa.
