Abstract(s)
O projeto explora
It is becoming increasingly evident the importance of municipalities cultivating their identity, so that they can be valued for the best they have to offer. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of its cultural heritage since knowledge of the past is essential to build the future. Alcobaça has an important legacy from the monks of the Cistercian order, but its collection goes beyond that. Its rich hydrographic network, recognized and used by the monks, was also used, years later, by the founders of COFTA. COFTA, a former spinning and fabric industry, was founded in 1875 and ceased operations in 1998. This company, which has constantly invested in innovation and achieved great national prestige, was one of the largest employers in the region, with over 1200 employees, always with a recognized concern for the social sector. After its closure, little was done to preserve its estate, which resulted in the degradation of this heritage and in its oblivion by the younger generations. This master's proposes the rehabilitation of some of these COFTA buildings. They are the Hydroelectric Power Plant, built in 1926 to replace the old coal engines that supplied energy to the Company, to be converted into a museum, the Assistência Araújo Guimarães building, inaugurated in 1936, which housed social support activities, and will now house a cafeteria, artistic residencies and a library, and the former Transformation Post, which will be adapted into a versatile exhibition space. The thesis also proposes the creation of a leisure park, taking advantage of the Alcoa River floodplain, without which the rehabilitation of these buildings would be disconnected. This park with 9.23 hectares follows the river for more than 1.4 km and seeks to meet the recreational needs of the city population, recovering a space currently vacant. The project explores the potential of the site, creating parking and accesses, taking advantage of the water network, the dams and trenches that are currently in bad condition, seeking to give back to the people of Alcobaça the usufruct of a place that, in addition to its spatial qualities, is significant for their culture.
