Abstract(s)
In recent years there has been a growing concern to preserve and rehabilitate buildings in considerably poor conditions, aiming to preserve the architectural heritage and identity, and with the prospect of enhancing its historical values. Therefore, the present work is a proposal for a rehabilitation of a former single family residence, set in a rural environment. The area to intervene is enclosed in a perimeter in which the vegetation has little expression, mainly due to the agricultural nature of this locality and has throughout the year a significant sun exposure and mild temperatures. The site of Mãe-de-Deus, a small settlement where the object of study is placed in, belongs to the municipality of Santa Cruz, in Madeira Island and has been subject of a large demographic increase, with substantial landscape modifications. The house consists of two volumes erected in different periods. The oldest part was built in cut stone and presents a characteristic typology of the typical vernacular architecture of Madeira's rural areas. The most recent part was built in concrete and features a typology accordingly to the family needs. Overall, the dwelling has livable conditions and exhibits some areas with critical degradation, mainly in the most recent part. The fact the habitation hasn’t been inhabited for ten years, contributes considerably for its progressive deterioration. Based on the research, information gathered and field work, it is proposed to reinstate the vitality of the area in which the intervention will take place and preserve its architectural heritage. It also intends to be a contribution to regain the harmony it once had and give the proper recognition to a special area for those who were once its inhabitants.
