Abstract(s)
Nearly 25 per cent of Portuguese people suffer from depression. This mental illness tends to increase, although a lot of people arenât careful with it and donât know it. People must have a positive self-concept and itâs the key to eradicate this pathology. Adolescence consists of an important moment in construction and consideration of oneself. This essay intends to understand which organized sport system (scholastic or federate) influences in a more positive way the self-concept of teenagers. The sample (n=120) is composed by a group of teenagers who donât practice sports (n=40), a group of teenagers who practice sports just at school (n= 40) and a group of teenagers who practice sports in federation (n=40). These groups belong to the council of Cabeceiras de Basto and they are between 12 and 17 years old (average is 14, 5, standard deviation 1, 5). It was used the Piers-Harris Childrenâs Self-Concept Scale 2 (PHCSCS 2) program, adapted by Veiga (2006) to the Portuguese population, to get results about the global self-concept and about its dimensions as anxiety, comportamental aspect, intellectual statue, physical aspect, popularity and satisfaction/happiness. To compare the average obtained in the evaluated dimensions it was used the SPSS program and the non parametric test of Mann Whitney U (Wilcoxon W) (p †0, 05). Results show that federate sports promote in a more positive way the global-concept, as the dimension physical appearance, comparing it to school sports. About the results of those who practice sports at school and those who donât practice sports at all, there were found no significant differences between these two groups. This way, we suppose school sports donât influence is a significant way the self-concept of the studied individuals. The obtained results also show that female teenagers have a more fragile self-concept comparing it to male teenagers.
