sociedade actual é caracterizada por uma enorme diversidade e complexidade, exigindo-se mais do que nunca, cidadãos interessados, activos, críticos, coerentes, responsáveis e conscientes da necessidade do exercício da sua função social. O jardim-de-infância, enquanto instância de socialização, desempenha um papel preponderante na educação dos seres humanos e na formação de cidadãos competentes. As funções do Educador de Infância, enquanto agente social, exigem a aquisição de novas/diferentes competências tendo em vista a formação de seres preparados para o exercício da cidadania no século XXI. É, pois, urgente definir um perfil de competências necessárias ao Educador de Infância enquanto promotor de uma educação para a cidadania democrática. Entre estas destacamos como mais importantes: ser observador, criativo, confiante, comunicador, justo, companheiro, respeitador, solidário, autêntico e, acima de tudo, reflexivo pois esta competência possibilita uma maior eficácia pedagógica.

The functions of the educator as a social worker demands the acquisition of new/different skills in order to form persons prepared for the exercise of citizenship in the twenty-first century. It is urgent to define an educator‟ skills profile required as a promoter of education for democratic citizenship. Among these skills we highlight the following ones: be observant, creative, confident, communicator, fair, friend, respectful, supportive, authentic and, above all, reflective, because this skill enables a more effective teaching.
